The Medical Director, Paediatrics role offers the opportunity to play a key leadership role in shaping and executing medical strategy within the rare disease field in Japan. This position combines scientific expertise, cross-functional collaboration, and external stakeholder engagement to support clinical development, medical education, and patient access initiatives. It is ideal for a physician with strong paediatric expertise who is passionate about advancing care for patients with rare and genetic diseases.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the Japan Medical Plan in collaboration with the Executive Medical Director.

  • Develop and implement territory plans aligned with the global medical strategy.

  • Work closely with the local Field Medical team, including engagement with key opinion leaders (KOLs) and development of scientific advocates and speakers.

  • Collaborate with Clinical Operations to support patient enrolment in company-sponsored clinical trials through identification of suitable trial sites and interactions with investigators.

  • Deliver clinical presentations and provide scientific and medical information in response to unsolicited enquiries, where appropriate, across academic, community, and healthcare provider settings.

  • Contribute to the development, planning, and execution of advisory board meetings.

  • Provide ongoing scientific and medical information updates to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Deliver timely feedback on emerging clinical and scientific trends, opportunities, and insights.

  • Provide scientific support for educational initiatives consistent with medical objectives.

  • Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with company policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures.

Requirements

  • Advanced clinical qualification in Japan, including MD or MD/PhD.

  • More than 5 years of clinical experience in general paediatrics and inherited metabolic diseases, with Japan Paediatric Board Certification, or at least 5–7 years of clinical experience in metabolic diseases and/or neurological disorders.

  • Experience in rare diseases is preferred, particularly in genetic disorders.

  • Biomedical research experience is preferred.

  • Previous industry experience within Medical Affairs is preferred but not essential.

  • Business-level English communication skills.

  • Native-level Japanese reading and writing proficiency.

  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated experience presenting clinical and scientific information effectively.

  • Expert understanding of the Japanese healthcare delivery system and its impact on patient care and medical practice.

  • Strong organisational, prioritisation, territory management, and time management skills.

  • Ability to make decisions that have a significant impact on departmental credibility, operations, and services.

  • Willingness to travel approximately 25%, including overnight travel as required.
