The Principal Software Engineer role offers an opportunity to lead technical direction and influence large-scale software systems within a sophisticated location platform. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality, scalable solutions while shaping engineering practices across multiple teams in Japan.

Responsibilities

  • Own and define the technical and architectural direction of complex, cross-component software systems to ensure scalability, reliability, and maintainability

  • Solve ambiguous and high-impact technical challenges, acting as a key authority and escalation point across teams

  • Design, document, and evolve system architectures, making informed trade-offs across performance, quality, cost, risk, and delivery speed

  • Drive engineering excellence through leadership in design reviews, code reviews, and adoption of best practices

  • Improve development efficiency and quality by promoting the use of AI-powered tools, automation, and modern engineering approaches

  • Contribute to cross-team alignment and influence strategic technical decisions that impact overall delivery outcomes

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in software development, including SDK development, back-end services, and APIs

  • Strong programming proficiency in Python, Java, Scala, or C++

  • Experience with continuous integration tools such as Jenkins or CI workflows in GitLab or GitHub

  • Familiarity with JIRA and test management systems

  • Strong communication skills in both Japanese and English

  • Knowledge of location-based services such as mapping, navigation, or GPS is advantageous

  • Exposure to cloud ecosystems such as AWS

  • Experience working with automotive organisations or supporting automotive manufacturers is beneficial

  • Demonstrated passion for technology, with a customer-centric mindset and willingness to explore new technologies
